Shikaoi

Shikaoi (鹿追町 Shikaoi-chō) is a town in Katō District, in the north west of Tokachi Subprefecture.

In 2006, Shikaoi had a population of 5,934. It has a land area of 405 km².

History

Shikaoi comes from the Ainu word kuteku'ushi meaning 'deer chase'.

The first settler was a man called Yamada who arrived from Tokyo in 1902. Other followed and in 1913 a train station opened. Shikaoi village was established in April 1921 with a population of about 4,500. The Kasai Railway was built in 1923 to help transport crops. The Self-Defence Force was deployed in Shikaoi after the war and the population reached 10,778 in 1961, after which it declined to its present level of around 6,000 from 1993.
